The FA Community Shield is a football competition in England, organized by the Football Association, which is played by the champion teams of the Premier League and the FA Cup. If the winner of the two tournaments is the same, the place is ranks second in the league.
The FA Community Shield held its first edition in 1908, in which the champion of the Football League First Division and the Southern Football League faced each other. Manchester United were the first winner, defeating QPR 4-0 in the tiebreaker at Stamford Bridge.
The format has evolved over the years. In several editions starting in 1913 a team of professionals faced off against one of amateurs. The first time it was disputed between the winners of the Football League and the FA Cup was in 1921.
The duel between champions was the one that took place from the 1930s, with a few exceptions. In 1950 the FA Community Shield was contested by the England national team that competed in the World Cup and a Football Association team that participated in matches in Canada during the summer. In 1961, Tottenham also played against a team made up of FA players.
In 1971, Arsenal had won both competitions and refused to play the tournament due to having pre-season friendlies already scheduled. This situation was also repeated the following year with Derby County and Leeds United as protagonists.
Between 1949 and 1991, in the event of a tie, both teams were considered FA Community Shield champions. A scenario that happened up to eleven times. The Football Association introduced penalty shootouts as a tiebreaker.
Currently, it is played at Wembley Stadium before the start of the new season. It serves as the starting gun for the English football course. The FA has classified the match as a friendly since 2009, allowing teams to use up to seven substitutions and making the disciplinary sanctions that apply during the match have no influence on the rest of the national tournaments.
The television rights of the FA Community Shield are part of the same package as those of the FA Cup, so, except for a few extensions, the same television broadcasts both competitions. For the period between 2021 and 2025, the broadcasting rights of the tournament for the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland were acquired by the ITV Sport group.
